Prof. Ghauri is a scholar with extensive experience in teaching, research and institution building. Before joining Oslo Business School in Norway (later merged with the Norwegian School of Management) as an Associate Dean, responsible for developing MBA and Executive MBA programmes, which became the flagship programmes for the school, professors Ghauri graduated from Uppsala University in Sweden with a Master and PhD and worked there as Assistant and Associate Professor for several years. He then joined the University of Groningen in Netherlands as Professor and Chair in the Faculty of Management & Organization, where he served the faculty as Dean between 1997 and 2001. During this period, he developed several international Master programmes in collaboration with Uppsala University, Sweden and University of Florida Gainesville, USA.

In 2001, Prof. Ghauri was invited to join Manchester Business School as Professor and Chair, where his main task was to develop an International Business Group and a Master programme in International Business and Management. In 2007, the International Business subject area at Manchester Business School was ranked as fifth in the world, second in Europe and number one in the UK by the Financial Times annual rankingHe then joined King’s College London as a Chaired Professor in May 2008 and worked there until he was approached by the University of Birmingham in 2015, where he is working at present. During the 7 years at King’s, he developed the MSc International Marketing and totally reorganised the MSc in International Management programmes. These 2 programmes are still the flagship programmes at King’s Business School.

During the years at King’s, he had an exciting portfolio of three fully funded research projects (funded by FP7- EU, ESRC and Soderberg’s Foundation Sweden). The focus in these projects has been multinational enterprises and their strategies and activities in Emerging Markets. For example, in the FP7-EU funded project (€ 2.3 million); “The impact of Multinational Enterprises on poverty reduction and sustainable development in Emerging Markets” was investigated.

At present, he is working on three research projects:

1.     Creating competitive advantage by serving marginalised communities in emerging markets: European firms in Latin America. With Axele Giroud, Manchester Business School, U.K. and Jorge Carniero, FGV, Brazil. Total funding of £1 million by ESRC – FAPESP, U.K.

2.     Creating Competitive Position through Ethical Behaviour: Swedish Firms in Emerging Markets, (with Ulf Elg, Lund University and Sara Hanell from Stockholm School of Economics, Sweden). Total funding of 7.4 million SEK (£700,000) funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Sweden. Three year project starting January 2019 (Extended for 1 year).

3.     ESRC-GCRF funding for the project, “Digital Technology-based New Business Model for Inclusive Development” (with X. Fu, Oxford University) at a total value of £ 772,000. Awarded in July 2018 with the project starting in September 2018 (Extended for 1 year).

For the IDMODEL project an APP has been developed and launched in Bangladesh that is now being used by people from poorer communities. Universty of Oxford and University of Birmingham are now registering a spin-off company and the idea is to expand the APP to more wider communities and perhaps to other developing countries. The project has thus an huge impact. Both Universities are also working on writing up impact cases.

Prof. Ghauri also sits on the Board of Directors for the Centre of International Business at Leeds University Business School in the U.K. Whilst serving on several review panels worldwide – from reviewing academic programmes through to external assessments for professorships. He is regularly invited to academic and professional conferences as a keynote speaker.
