Dr Mary Dawood obtained her BSc (Hons) in Economics from Alexandria University, Egypt, in 2004. Being interested in developing her IT skills, she studied an intensive 9-months course, and obtained a Diploma in Software Development from the Information Technology Institute, where she mastered several programming languages, database platforms, and operating systems. As a graduation project, she developed a web-based exam-setting and grading app.
In 2009, she completed her MSc degree in Economics at Alexandria University, and was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Economics there, teaching Principles of Economics, Intermediate Macro, Intro to Econometrics, and Economics of Money and Banking. Furthermore, she worked as the representative and coordinator of the department of economics in the university’s quality assurance and accreditation unit, and in the research project management unit. In addition, over the course of 6 months, she worked as a data collector in the World Bank IFC “Ease of Doing Business” Project.
She studied for the PhD in Economics at the University of Birmingham, UK, and obtained her degree in July 2016. During her studies, she assisted in teaching the modules of Intro to Econometrics, Corporate Finance, Financial Modelling and Forecasting Techniques, and Theory of Finance. In addition, she delivered two workshops in STATA and EViews to MSc students during the Dissertation Week.
Upon completing her PhD, she was appointed Lecturer in Economics at Alexandria University in June 2016, teaching Economics of Banking and Financial Markets, Macroeconomic Theories and Policies, Monetary and Banking Policies, Digital Economics, International Economics, and Intro to Statistical Software.
Dr Mary Dawood joined the University of Birmingham in July 2018 as a lecturer in economics. She is based in Birmingham (Edgbaston campus), but delivers most of her teaching at the new UoB Dubai campus. Since her appointment in this position, she became the module leader on a number of courses, including: Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Financial Markets and Institutions, Corporate Finance, Applied Economics and Statistics, European Economic Issues, and Introduction to Statistical Software. She has also supervised several final year and MSc dissertations, and took over a diversity of administrative roles, including programme admissions tutor, external resource hiring manager, examination officer and QA lead.
Dr Dawood was awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education with Distinction in October 2020 by the University of Birmingham. In recognition of her attainment against the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education, the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE) has awarded her the status of Fellow (FHEA) in September 2020. She is also engaged in a number of CPD programmes, including the Aurora Leadership Development and the Academic Team Leader.
