Giulia’s research is interdisciplinary, combining accounting, organization studies, and sociology with approaches from the arts. She relies on qualitative methods and seeks to contribute to the understanding of accounting practices within their social, historical, organizing and cultural context.

Biography

Giulia joined Birmingham Business School as Associate Professor of Accounting in January 2025. She was previously a Lecturer in Accounting at Royal Holloway University of London, where she was Director of the Centre for Critical and Historical Research on Organization and Society (CHRONOS).

In her research, Giulia investigates the relationship between accounting, accountability and the realm of the arts. Giulia’s research interests stem from an interdisciplinary background in accounting (BSc, MSc, Ph.D.) and the theatre (drama studies and work experience as an actress in TV and theatrical productions). In her research, she argues that arts-inspired research approaches can illuminate the affective dimension of accounting as they help delving into the felt experience of the individual, beyond cognitive and calculative approaches, shedding light into the powerful force of emotions and related alternative ‘rationalities’ in shaping accounting and organizing. In doing so, she argues that the arts can inspire new, more empathetic, and inclusive conceptualisations of accounting and accountability practices, thereby realizing the emancipatory potential of these practices.

Currently, she is working on several research projects with arts organizations aiming to understand how management, accounting and accountability practices can be drawn upon to support the relevant social role of these organizations in engendering social justice, inclusion and wellbeing, contributing to the social and economic dimensions of our society and to the achievement of the SDGs.
