The report

‘Conversion Therapy’ and the University of Birmingham c.1966-1983

An official University report was released in June 2022 as a result of the investigation into the ‘conversion therapy’ related activities of researchers at the University of Birmingham c.1966-1983.

The report outlines the activities carried out by psychologist Maurice Philip Feldman and psychiatrist Malcolm J. MacCulloch, based primarily on their publications, with supplemental information from the limited related records in the University of Birmingham’s archive, held at the Cadbury Research Library, and some items from the press.

The publications offer significant insight into the work of the two men. The bulk of their research was carried out at Crumpsall Hospital, Manchester, before their arrival at the University. However, their work would have featured in discussions at Birmingham about offering positions to the two men. Indeed, most of Feldman and MacCulloch’s publications related to what is often now known as ‘conversion therapy’ were written and appeared in print while they were employed at the University of Birmingham. Several departments claimed the publications as their own outputs. Feldman was promoted to increasingly higher career stages in the Psychology department at the University.

The Appendix to the Report is here given in full. It details the publications written by Feldman and/or MacCulloch between c.1966 and 1983, when the men were employed by the University of Birmingham – Feldman throughout this time, and MacCulloch between 1967 and 1970 or early-1971.
