Rethinking Theatrical Documents
Professor Tiffany Stern has just completed an edition, Rethinking Theatrical Documents in Shakespeare's England, for Arden Shakespeare (Bloomsbury).
This volume brings together major scholars – Claire M. L. Bourne, Heidi Craig, Laura Estill, Peter Holland, Andras Kisery, Roslyn Knutson, James J. Marino, Sonia Massai, David McInnis, Lucy Munro, Richard Preiss, Matt Steggle, Holger Syme, Sarah Wall-Randell – to introduce, analyse and theorise the rich variety of entangled documents produced in the playhouse before, during and after performance.
With sections on the documents from which a play was constructed and learned (including sources, plots, drafts, casting lists, repertory lists, actors’ parts); the documents from which a play was performed (including prologues and epilogues, staged titleboards, staged books); the documents into which a play resolved after performance (including passages in miscellanies and commonplace books, and ballads); and the documents that survive when a play itself does not, it provides new material and new ways of thinking about that material. It informs and complicates ideas about play-construction, performance, revision, and reception, redefining the relationship between play, text and performance.
