Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies
The Pentecostal/Charismatic and Evangelical movements are among the largest and fastest-growing traditions within world Christianity and indeed of any faith.
Birmingham has a long-standing tradition of studying these movements, ranging back over 40 years to the 1970s when the noted scholar of Pentecostalism Walter J. Hollenweger was Professor of Missions in the department.
The current academic staff of the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies have diverse interests in the field and have published widely, particularly with reference to Africa, Asia, the Third World, practical/empirical theology and Pentecostal hermeneutics.
Birmingham is now one of the largest and most prominent research centres for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies throughout the world and our work has received international recognition and acclaim. As well as contributing to the department’s undergraduate programmes, we offer taught and research graduate degrees, and other assistance for researchers.
The Orchard Learning Resources Centre on our Selly Oak campus has unique and extensive documentation in the internationally acclaimed Harold Turner Collection, with over 27,000 documents on the subject of New Religious Movements, African Initiated Churches, Pentecostal and analogous movements worldwide.
