Study with Us at MoveWell

The Centre for Movement and Wellbeing (MoveWell)

We offer unique experiences to University of Birmingham students who share our passion for helping community members achieve their health and wellness goals.

Some of the unique experiences we offer our students include:

  • Ability to work closely with community members and patient groups under the supervision of health care professionals and academics.
  • Opportunities to be involved at MoveWell through experiential education placements and in unpaid volunteer positions.
  • Opportunity to learn from our community members and patient groups and forge special friendships. In working with diverse groups, students apply their knowledge, hone their skills, and gain invaluable experience, including clinical experience hours required for professional designations.
  • Involvement with MoveWell outreach initiatives and support academic-led research projects involving community members and patient groups.

Practice-Based Education Placements

Students are required to complete six practice-based education placements covering 1000 hours whilst studying for their Physiotherapy degree. The placements should cover the four pillars of practice: acute, non-acute, outpatient, non-clinical, which then ensures exposure to a wide variety of placement specialities and settings, ensuring breadth of experience upon graduation. Many of our graduates enter healthcare careers which may include working for the NHS, private practice or academia.

MoveWell hosts student practice based placements which provide an opportunity to apply theory to practice within an outpatient clinical environment. The placement will cover 6 weeks during which time you will assess and treat patients with a range of conditions requiring physiotherapy care, under the supervision and guidance of our resident team of highly qualified and experienced physiotherapists.

Whilst a placement at MoveWell will provide a hands-on opportunity to apply your technical skills it will also encourage you to find out more about your strengths, values, motivations, interests and will help develop your soft skills, such as teamwork and problem solving.

Pitchside Placements (MSc Pre-reg)

In addition to our MSK and neuro placements we also host sports injury placements that include pitch side monitoring and intervention for UOB team members who suffer an injury during a match.

Student placement projects will be formed around the sport’s teams they are working with and are an important part of the assessment for the placement element of the physio degree.

The placements will run in 5 or 6 week blocks for up to 10 students per block and students will me mentored by our resident physio team.
