The Alan Turing Institute PhD Student Enrichment Scheme

The Scheme is designed to give students undertaking a PhD the opportunity to support and enhance their current research by accessing the facilities and opportunities available at The Alan Turing Institute and its partners. Students usually join in their second or third years of a typical doctorate to further the work they are undertaking for their research project and support the completion of the PhD.

About the Enrichment scheme

Two awards are available: the Enrichment Community Award and the Enrichment Placement Award.

Enrichment Community Award

The Community Award will provide access to the Turing’s online community and resources, as well as a flexible grant to undertake research activity. Up to 50 awards of £1,500 will be offered that will become active in October in the current academic year.

Enrichment Placement Award

The Placement Award offers candidates the opportunity to undertake a 6- or 9-month placement at the Turing HQ in London. This award carries an expectation that holders will engage in person at the office for a minimum of 3 days/week. All Placement Award holders will join our online network and will also automatically receive a Community Award.

Up to 40 awards will be offered and will become active in October or the following January at the candidate’s choice. The award will provide a stipend uplift of £450 per month to facilitate relocating or commuting to the Turing HQ.

Although the primary location for Placement Awards will be the Institute HQ in London, it will be possible for placements to be undertaken (in whole or part) at two of the Turing’s university partners: The Jean Golding Institute at the University of Bristol or the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics at the University of Leeds. Please see the FAQs for more information.

Further benefits of the Enrichment scheme include

  • Full induction to the Turing community and access to training throughout the year.
  • Access to a range of events, seminars, reading groups, and workshops delivered by leaders in research, government, and industry – see a selection of what is happening at the Institute on the events pages.
  • Opportunities to collaborate on Turing research projects.
  • High spec laptop for the duration of your placement and access to the Turing offices in the British Library (Placement Awards only)
  • Ability to apply for Turing computing resource including Azure cloud credits and support from our dedicated Research Engineering Group.

How to apply

Who can apply?

There is no typical Enrichment student. Applications are welcome from students who will embrace the opportunity to enrich their own research through the Turing environment. We encourage applications from a broad range of academic disciplines and backgrounds, especially those whose research spans multiple disciplines and applications and aligns with the Institute’s research areas. Students should consider how they would best utilise the Enrichment scheme to support their current research and contribute to their doctoral work.

Students will remain enrolled at the University during the Enrichment scheme and must have the support of their supervisor.

Potential applicants should review the Call Document for full eligibility and assessment criteria before preparing their application. Reading Turing’s FAQs is also recommend.

Applications and deadline

Applications for the  Enrichment scheme typically close during the last week of February at 12pm (noon) GMT.

For full details, including how to apply, please visit the Engagement Scheme page on Turing’s website.
