Supergen Network+

We are an integrated, forward-looking platform that supports, nurtures the expertise of the energy storage community, disseminating it through academia, industry and policy, at a particularly important time when decisions on future funding and research strategy are still being resolved.

As a community, the Supergen Network+ will identify key research barriers within the energy storage sector so that global agencies can best direct available funding and support. Our vision is an environment where stakeholders with an interest in energy storage are connected, where early career researchers (ECRs) feel nurtured and positioned to advance, and where equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is an integral element of thought and discussion across the field. During the course of the grant the Supergen Network+ will fund a number of feasibility studies through open, competitive calls to the community. In addition, it will run a regular travel and conference grants scheme, with a particular focus on ECRs.

The Supergen Network+ has secured £1M in funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and has a core partnership of 19 investigators from 12 UK institutions, all focused on the wider advancement, exchange and dissemination of energy storage expertise. A further 100 organisations from the UK and abroad have pledged their support for the network.

The Supergen Storage Network+ is led by Professor Yulong Ding (University of Birmingham).

Launched in September 2019and now with 11 universities, and now with 11 universities,19 investigators and 34 supporting partners, we connect UK researchers in energy storage we connect UK researchers in energy storage and decarbonisation. We are the UK Supergen Energy Storage Network Plus. Through our network, we are creating a dynamic, forward thinking and sustainable platform, connecting and serving people from diverse backgrounds across the whole energy storage value chain. Energy storage and its benefits for our energy system, including society and the wider economy, can only be fully unlocked if we operate outside silos. A hub that brings people together from academia, industry, government together from academia, industry, government and the society to deliver practical pathways for change.to deliver practical pathways for change .In the ever evolving landscape of renewable energy. In the ever evolving landscape of renewable energy, Supergen leads the charge with cutting edge research and technical brilliance. We are passionate about ensuring a vibrant and diverse community within the Supergen and beyond. This brings about positive growth and development within the sector. The energy storage community in the UK is extremely vibrant and our early career researchers are the engine room of much of our world leading research. The Supergen network is supporting the development of early career researchers across disciplines to develop the next generation of leaders in academia, industry and government. The UK being a global leader in the development of large scale, low cost energy storage low cost energy storage and the opportunities and growth here is why I really look forward to my career ahead. I have been supported throughout my research and career, from mentorship to dedicated funding opportunities for early career researchers. The ESN+ helps stakeholders to look forward to what the next customer technology could be and to plan to use flexibility to manage the grids and deliver investment in grid upgrades and new connection points. One of the things that Supergen has done extremely well over these past four or five years is highlight the huge need for medium duration energy storage. Supergen has helped to pick out the huge importance of technologies like compressed air, liquid air and pumped thermal energy storage, which are going to be really important in our net zero future. Together, we shape a world powered by innovation and a commitment to a sustainable future.
