Our online Bioinformatics Masters degree includes online lectures, mini-case studies and group projects.

The programme covers the essential topics related to bioinformatics, starting with introductory modules, followed by applied and advanced modules to gradually build your knowledge throughout this unique multidisciplinary programme.
The online MSc Bioinformatics is a 180 credit full masters programme that takes approximately two and a half years to complete.

There are twelve 10 credit taught modules and a 60 credit dissertation. You will take six 10 credit core modules in your first year, followed by six 10 credit core modules in your second year, with each module lasting approximately 8 weeks in total.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
To be eligible to apply for the Online MSc Bioinformatics, you will need to have obtained (or be predicted to obtain) at least an upper second-class degree or postgraduate diploma in life sciences, biomedical sciences, mathematics, computer science or another relevant quantitative subject from a UK university OR an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
To be eligible for the online MSc Bioinformatics, you need a 2:1 degree or postgraduate diploma in life sciences, biomedical sciences, mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative subject from a UK university or an equivalent qualification.

If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.

If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
The University tuition fee covers the cost of your tuition, supervision, assessment and includes membership to the Guild of Students.

The programme fee includes any online resources, including full access to the online learning platform, course materials and required digital reading materials. The fee does not include any personal expenses for new technical equipment or office supplies.
