The MSc is a highly dynamic and rewarding course. As shown by the diverse content covering the rationale, set up and management of clinical trials, through to the mixed methods of teaching and learning, enabling a robust understanding of the life cycle of a clinical trial. It’s an invaluable course for anyone who wants to start a career in clinical trials or progress in their current trial-related profession.
This course will run over 12 months in a full-time-mode. There's also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis or flexibly (up to 5 years). While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each semester. This is based on a full time Masters course.
During Term One you’ll develop a thorough understanding of why clinical trials have become so important in the evaluation of healthcare, social care and public health interventions. You’ll gain an understanding of the various types of outcomes commonly collected in contemporary clinical trials and will explore the procedural and logistical considerations when setting up a trial.

Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit was one of the first clinical trials units to be awarded the UK Clinical Research Collaboration accreditation.
As a Birmingham student, you’ll be joining the academic elite and will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your peers. From the outset you’ll be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. Teaching is likely to take place in one or two-week blocks, and you’ll participate in a range of teaching styles:

Masters students complete their degree by also undertaking a research project and writing a dissertation, providing the opportunity to pursue a specific research question in depth, and to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired during the taught part of the programme.
You’ll have access to a comprehensive support system that will assist and encourage you, including personal tutors who can help with both academic and welfare issues.
Masters students will complete seven core modules, totalling 120 credits and will undertake a 60 credit dissertation. Postgraduate Diploma students will take the 120 credits from the taught core modules as per the Masters programme, but will not complete the dissertation. Those seeking a Postgraduate Certificate will take 60 credits from the taught modules. You can transfer from the Certificate to Diploma and from Diploma to the Masters based on appropriate performance.

Postgraduate certificate programmes
All students on the postgraduate certificate programme are required to complete taught modules to the value of 60 credits. There is one compulsory module (20 credits) that all students must complete and a choice of three additional options worth 40 credits in total. The three options are listed below. Students must decide on their options at the end of the initial compulsory module.

To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.

If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.
