Studying Advanced Practice in Healthcare will enable you to advance your practice and develop skills essential to the role of the advanced practitioner and clinical team leader, helping you to deliver innovative healthcare in the future.

This multi-professional programme is aimed at registered healthcare professionals who wish to advance their practice to meet the challenges of modern healthcare delivery. The programme enables students to develop their critical and reflective thinking whilst developing their knowledge and skills as researchers, educators, managers and clinical leaders. Successful completion is likely to lead to enhanced employment opportunities and enable you to contribute to improving healthcare.  Suitable for both home and international students, the programme has been designed to provide flexibility to enable practitioners irrespective of discipline, or speciality to advance their contribution in their chosen career.

Throughout this programme you will learn the key pillars of practice to enhance your clinical expertise. Studying Advanced Practice in Healthcare will develop your knowledge of the political stance in a healthcare setting, allow you to discover how to plan effective service delivery, whilst you become aware of hierarchial research and its contribution to patient care.

Optional modules:
As a student on the programme, you can choose from a range of specialist clinical option modules delivered within the School of Nursing and Midwifery and across the College of Medicine and Health. This includes First Contact, Chronic Disease Management, Common Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Principles of Palliative Care for Children and Young People, Respiratory Medicine in the Community, and Introduction to Trauma Science. Alternatively, you can further your knowledge in leadership and management, education, or research through the selection of modules which align to these areas.

Our Standard Requirements

Typical entry requirements:

  • The applicant should normally hold an honours degree in their clinical field of practice
  • Applicants will need to demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development that shows an ability to study at Masters level
  • The applicant must have at least 12 months clinical experience post qualification
  • Evidence of registration with a healthcare regulator within the UK or your home country

English language requirements

You can satisfy our English language requirements in two ways:

English to IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component).

If you need help with your English language skills then support is available.

The English for Academic Purposes Presessional course is for international students who have a conditional offer to study at the University, but who do not currently meet the English language requirements. The course is tailored to your level of English and allows you to meet the English language requirements for your programme without retaking IELTS. The EAP programme runs throughout the year and offers different programme lengths ranging from 42 weeks to 6 weeks. The length of course you need depends on your future course, your existing IELTS score and the English level you need for your university degree.

As a Birmingham student, you will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your clinical peers. From the outset you will be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. We want you to be challenged and will encourage you to think for yourself within your professional role, essential for advancing your clinical practice.

The modules within the programme are delivered in various ways including:

  • block teaching (usually Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm)

You will participate in a range of teaching styles including:

  • lectures
  • eLectures
  • small group tutorials
  • presentations
  • peer group learning
  • self-study

Lectures are delivered by subject specialists, clinicians, service users and carers. Many of the lectures are from visiting experts who practice and/or research in their specific field. The course is academic in nature and you are expected to use the basic content as a springboard for further self-study.

All programme presentations and materials are available on Canvas (the University’s on-line learning platform) for follow up after lectures. You will also have access to a comprehensive support system that will assist and encourage you, including personal tutors and welfare tutors who can help with both academic and welfare issues.

Assessment Methods

The programme has a variety of assessment styles including essays, oral presentations, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations and examinations.

The dissertation is a substantial piece of work. For the dissertation you will be supervised by an academic within the department and supported by a series of online resources. The dissertation is assessed by 2 examiners.

This programme is aimed at healthcare professionals from a variety of specialties who want to develop their contribution across research, teaching and learning, leadership, and clinical domains. Appealing to both home and international registered healthcare practitioners, the programme aims to support the development of future leaders in healthcare, equipping practitioners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to navigate the challenges of modern health and social care delivery.
