This course equips you with essential skills to meet industry and regulatory demands for integrating occupational health, safety, and environmental issues, ensuring compliance and promoting sustainable practices.
Our MSc Health, Safety and Environment Management course equips you with the skills to identify, assess, and manage risks, ensuring safe and sustainable practices across various industries.
From the organisation of the taught modules to thought-provoking field trips, learning was enhanced both practically and theoretically.
Course Structure
Our Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)-accredited MSc in Health, Safety and Environment Management equips you with the skills for certified-level membership, addressing industry demands to integrate occupational health, safety, and environmental issues.
Two years of relevant work experience is required to study the course.
In Semester 1, you will study:
- Health, Safety and Environment Management (online) (10 credits)
- Assessment and Control of Occupational Risks (20 credits)
- Environmental Protection and Climate Change (20 credits)
- Research Methods (MSc students only)

Course delivery
The course is taught using formal lectures; workshops; group work; case studies and student centered learning, recognising the importance of technical and practical skills as well as academic excellence.

The MSc is offered on a full-time (one-year) and part-time (two-year) basis. The Postgraduate Diploma is only available full-time (one-year). All modules are compulsory.

Entry requirements
To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.

English language requirements
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.
For this course we require IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band, which is equivalent to:
- TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 Listening, 21 Speaking and 19 in Writing
- Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
- Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component
- LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 25 in each skill
English Presessional Programmes
Improve your knowledge of spoken and written English in preparation for studying at Birmingham with our pre-sessional English courses. If you have a conditional offer, you can take one of these courses as an alternative to retaking IELTS or other similar qualifications.
