The aim of the course is to improve the standards of basic semen analysis. It is an international course, aimed at laboratories outside the Nordic countries.

Two persons from each laboratory - one with medical responsibility (“supervisor”) and one engaged in practical laboratory work (“technician”) - are encouraged to participate in the course.

Speakers:

Dr Lars Björndahl, Dr Meurig Gallagher, and Professor Jackson Kirkman-Brown.

Fee includes:

Lectures and guided, printed handouts of presentations, practical exercises, lab coats, get together party, lunches and coffee/tea. The WHO laboratory manual and other books are NOT INCLUDED.

Maximum number of participants will be 20.

Accreditation:

Learners will receive a certificate of completion from the Association of Reproductive and Clinical Scientists.

Learning outcomes:

  • To learn basic terminology and outline of male reproductive physiology.
  • To understand clinical aspects of semen analysis including definitions and use of thresholds
  • To conduct a basic semen analysis, comprising:

- Making a wet preparation 

- Examining a wet preparation 

- Assessing sperm count/concentration 

- Assessing sperm morphology 

- Assessing sperm motility 

- Assessing sperm vitality 

  • To gain an appreciation of wider sperm test such as anti-sperm antibodies and sperm kinematic assessment using CASA.
