Athena Swan is a national charter, run by Advance HE, which supports Higher Education institutions in their efforts to create inclusive teaching and research environments. Over the last twelve months, a team led by Dr Hilary Brown carried out an assessment of the School’s gender equality context and identified future priorities for its gender equality work. As a result, the School has achieved its first Athena Swan award, which will be valid for the next five years.

In its evaluation, the Athena Swan Charter Panel commended the School for its “strong application”, acknowledging that the School has made good progress with its gender equality work over the last few years. The School was praised for undertaking a “thorough self-assessment which has resulted in a good understanding of the issues facing the School” and for devising a well-thought-out action plan. Overall, the Panel concluded that “the careful consideration and effort which has gone into the submission is clear” and congratulated the School on its Bronze award.

Professor Emma Tyler, Head of the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music, commented: “I am so delighted that LCAHM has achieved Athena SWAN Bronze status, which is testament to the hard work and commitment of our entire team. It is rewarding to see our efforts recognised in this way and our delivery team is already working hard to turn our action plan into a reality over the next few years.”

In committing to promoting the UK Athena Swan Principles in all its practices and initiatives, the School joins a global community with a shared goal of addressing gender inequalities and embedding inclusive cultures.
