The University of Birmingham has improved its position amongst the best-performing research-intensive universities in the world – rising four places in the QS World University Rankings.
Now ranked at 80 in the prestigious global ranking, which is unveiled today (4 Jun), the University has performed particularly well in a range of QS categories introduced last year.
Birmingham has risen 10 places to 31 in the International Research Network - a measure of the global scope and distribution of the University’s international research partnerships.
Academic reputation has also improved with the University ranking at 94 (up 5 places on last year), whilst the ranking for Sustainability has soared by 111 places to 35.

The QS World University Rankings are the most used global rankings and are a measure of a university’s global reputation. The overall rise follows last month’s announcement that seven subject areas placed in the Top 50 of the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Two of the University’s five faculty areas are in the top 100 of the prestigious global ranking – with Life Sciences & Medicine at 68 and Arts & Humanities placing at 64. Sport, Dentistry, English, Theology, Anatomy & Physiology, Performing Arts, and Linguistics all place in the Top 50.
Once again Sport is in the top 10 (6) with Linguistics rising 21 places to 28, Performing Arts up three places to 49 and English up one place to 26. There are 27 subject areas in the top 100 – an increase of five on last year.
