University of Birmingham researchers among top global influential academics

Academics ranked among the world's most ‘Highly Cited’ researchers.

University of Birmingham researchers are recognised among the world’s most influential academics

Ten University of Birmingham researchers are recognised among the world’s most influential academics, according to new rankings released by Clarivate.

Researchers on the prestigious list are ranked according to the scale of their influence in their field of research and the number of ‘Highly Cited’ papers they have each authored.

Five researchers whose main affiliation is with the University of Birmingham are listed as ‘Cross-Field’ - demonstrating the importance of their work in multiple research areas:

  • Dr Christine Foyer – Plant & Animal Science
  • Professor Roy Harrison – Cross-Field
  • Professor Nick Loman – Biology & Biochemistry
  • Dr Yuli Shan – Cross-Field
  • Professor Richard Riley – Cross-Field

Another five researchers are affiliated to Birmingham, with their main affiliation at another university, they include:

  • Professor Paulus Kirchhof - Cross-Field
  • Dr Thomas Pugh - Cross-Field
  • Dr Jian Yang - Cross-Field
  • Professor Xin Yao - Cross-Field
  • Dr Shuang Zhang, Shuang - Physics

Their research papers rank in the top one percent by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. The rankings are built on rigorous citation analysis and refined by expert judgment from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).
