The Bramall Music Building, on a bright sunny day.

Steve Kane is a conductor and educator who currently serves as Musical Director of Cinderford Band in Gloucestershire. A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, he was a principal player of Cory Band – one of the oldest and most renowned bands in the world – for ten years between 2011 and 2021.

Upon his appointment, Kane commented “It’s a fantastic opportunity to be working with the University of Birmingham Brass Band and I can’t wait to get started.”

Based at the Bramall Music Building, Steve is another addition to the distinguished music-making team at the university, which has a wealth of internationally renowned musicians delivering activity on a weekly basis.

University Brass Band is a flagship ensemble of University Music, giving two concerts per year, often jointly with the University Wind Band, Chamber Choirs, or in collaboration with local bands. The band plays a wide variety of music, from traditional brass standards to film music and arrangements of pop classics. The ensemble is an un-auditioned group with no cap on membership – often reaching 40-55 players, rather than a standard band format. The annual band visit to the ‘Uni Brass’ competition is a highlight of its academic year.
