Dr Rowland Seymour from the School of Mathematics engaged with a group of Year 12 pupils through our Outreach programme. It explored using statistics to model outbreaks of infectious diseases, as part of the University of Birmingham Institute of Microbiology and Infection's (IMI) Summer School.
The students learned how to build statistical models of how infectious diseases spread, and how we can use randomness to better model real world infections. The students enjoyed simulating an outbreak among the class and seeing how long it took for everyone to become infected.
This was part of the University of Birmingham Institute of Microbiology and Infection’s (IMI) Summer School. The IMI Summer School aims to give year 12 students an immersive experience of microbiology and infectious disease research at the Institute of Microbiology and Infection.
The summer school runs for one week and hosts 30 students for their ‘work experience’ week. Students are currently invited from the University of Birmingham School, which is a modern, inclusive school, admitting students from a variety of catchment areas across Birmingham.
