MA Film & TV student Emma Hughes shares her reflections of the Careers Fair:

At the start of October, we Film and TV MA students had the opportunity to visit the Midlands Arts Centre in Cannon Hill Park for the Royal Television Society Midlands Careers Fair. The day was exceptionally insightful for all of us.

The career fair featured a wide range of industry stands, allowing us to speak directly with professionals and pick their brains about their career paths. It was fascinating to hear how their careers began, how they’ve progressed, and what their day-to-day lives look like now. For students like us, it was incredibly valuable to see where our careers could start and how they might evolve. The experience reinforced my passion for my master's program and motivated me to get the most out of my course. The fair also opened my eyes to the vast array of roles in the industry—many of which I hadn’t even considered. We met people working in everything from lighting, camera work, and production to post-production, casting, writing, and acting. It was inspiring to learn about career paths I didn’t know existed and to think more broadly about future opportunities.

Some personal highlights for me included sitting in the newsreader’s chair and presenting to a real ITV News camera—a fun and eye-opening experience. I also enjoyed speaking with Sally Broome, the casting director known for her work on The Inbetweeners and Skins, who shared valuable insights into the casting world. Overall, it was an incredibly enjoyable and educational day at the Midlands Arts Centre. I would urge fellow students with the same interest in the screen industries to attend events like this - there is so much to learn and so many inspiring professionals to meet.
