Based on a recent Journal of Democracy article titled “Misunderstanding Democratic Backsliding”, this is the second episode in the exciting new partnership between CEDAR and this leading academic journal outlet.

A common argument to explain the ongoing global democratic crisis is that democracy has failed to deliver safe and prosperous lives for its citizens and people are getting disenchanted with it. Thomas Carothers and Brendan Hartnett talk with CEDAR host Licia Cianetti about why this is in fact not the case. Democracies the world over, they argue, are not being undone by disenchanted citizens but by leaders with predatory political ambitions that use all opportunities to defy constraints to their power.
