Budget 2024: A budget should be a balancing act

Dr Sara Hassan comments on the environmental, social and economic implications of the Budget.

Ariel view of some roads.

"While balancing the budget is essential, government policy must also take into account environmental, social, and economic impacts. Tackling climate change should be prioritised within tax policy by promoting sustainable energy and reducing emissions, rather than relying solely on isolated measures like reinstating the fuel duty escalator. A coherent transport strategy, for instance, would lower emissions and improve social inclusivity, rather than making public transport less accessible by raising bus fare caps.

Likewise, the government should exercise caution with increases in employer taxes; such measures could stifle economic growth, particularly for businesses struggling with recent inflationary pressures. A balanced approach would integrate economic recovery with environmental and social goals, ensuring a fair and forward-thinking fiscal policy."
