Dr. Ben Perry from the University of Birmingham has been awarded a prestigious five-year NIHR Advanced Fellowship. This fellowship will support the development of evidence and resources toward the implementation of PsyMetRiC, a groundbreaking clinician-facing tool designed to accurately predict the risk of young people with psychosis developing physical health problems up to six years later.

PsyMetRiC addresses a critical need in mental health care. Individuals with chronic psychotic disorders face a significantly reduced life expectancy, dying 15-20 years sooner than the general population, primarily due to comorbid physical conditions. By providing clinicians and patients with individualised risk assessments for future physical health issues, PsyMetRiC enables early intervention and preventive measures, with the aim of improving long-term health outcomes.

PsyMetRiC has the potential to transform the way we approach the physical health of young people with psychosis. With this tool, we can take proactive steps to prevent poor health outcomes from the very beginning

Extensively tested in the UK and now in seven other countries across four continents, PsyMetRiC has demonstrated its accuracy and reliability. The NIHR Advanced Fellowship will further enhance its development and implementation evidence, ensuring that more clinicians and patients can benefit from this innovative tool.
