The latest People, Power, Politics episode features a conversation between Prof Marlies Glasius (University of Amsterdam) and CEDAR’s Licia Cianetti about authoritarian practices. The conversation is based on Marlies’s recent book Authoritarian Practices in a Global Age, published by the Oxford University Press (2023).

Marlies and Licia discuss the following questions and more:

  • What is an authoritarian practice and how do we know one when we see it?
  • How and why do we need to make a distinction between liberal and authoritarian practices?
  • How should we understand the proliferation of authoritarian practices?
  • Are they a prelude to open attacks on democratic institutions or should we see them more as an alternative way in which democracy is perverted or eroded?
