The School is delighted to confirm that we are able to offer the highly prestigious Mr William E. Lardner award for the 2018/19 session. One award, which is tenable for a period of one year, is available to a high performing Civil Engineering student to provide support for a Masters level programme.

This award is made possible by the generous support of Mr William E Lardner, who graduated in Civil Engineering in 1952 from the University of Birmingham. He then emigrated to Canada where he built a successful career in the construction industry. His company, Deep Foundations Contractors Inc., is recognised as one of the most innovative geotechnical construction engineering companies and has been involved in many of the projects that dominate the lives of Canadians and North Americans, including the CN Tower and Rogers Centre in Toronto, and a new underground rail tunnel joining Sarnia, Ontario, Canada with Port Huron, Michigan, United States.

Mr Lardner was an active philanthropist in Canada and visited us in the UK in 2010 in order to set up the William E. Lardner Award here at the University of Birmingham. Sadly, Mr Lardner passed away in 2018, and his family have continued to support the development of students at the University of Birmingham, through the continued provision of the award.

This award is tenable for one year only.

Students are automatically considered for the award when they enrol to study with the Department of Civil Engineering, and eligible candidates will be invited to submit an application during the Autumn term, to be considered by a scholarship panel within the School of Engineering.

For more information please contact the School of Engineering Admissions Team at

The scholarship is only eligible for study at our UK campus.
