Earlier this month David Lock QC from No.5 Chambers delivered the inaugural lecture in a lecture series called Perspectives on Public Law. This new series is jointly organised by the School’s Public Law and Human Rights Research Cluster and CEPLER (Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research).
As Head of the Administrative and Public Law Group at No.5, and as a former minister and MP, David Lock QC was especially well placed to offer thoughts on ‘Law, Politics and Public Law’.
In his lecture, Lock made the case for “the best sort of law to practise”. Reflecting on a number of recent cases that he has argued both for and against public bodies, he encouraged students at Birmingham Law School “to paddle their professional canoes up the tributary marked ‘public law’ in the future”. “The waters in this stream are always choppy and there is more heartbreak than success”, Lock cautioned, “but for those who make it, life is never dull”.
