In 2011-2012, the Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management (CHASM) ran a new module for final-year undergraduates in social policy, 'Your Money and Your Life: from welfare state to personal finance'. A total of 25 students took the module, giving it an average satisfaction rating of 4.7 out of 5.

The module combines academic debate about the shift in responsibility for financial security from the state to the individual with involvement from external agencies (Birmingham CAB and Law Centre took part this year), and some financial capability sessions for students.
