European Education and Training

Working with wide-ranging European partners, we have developed a broad range of education and training initiatives to expand the reach and impact of our collaborations. The Europe Hub is here to help if you are motivated by the opportunities below and are interested in developing something similar.

Joint Programmes

We recognise the power of pooling academic expertise to develop and deliver distinctive European programmes that give our students the edge.

MA in International Population Health Management with Leiden University

Delivered jointly with Leiden University, this two-year masters is a multidisciplinary programme designed to provide comprehensive training in population health management. Benefiting from expert tuition and with teaching located at both Universities, the course covers areas such as health inequalities, health economics, and leadership and management in health.

Joint PhD opportunities with European partners

BAM is a senior scientific and technical federal institute with responsibility to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in Germany. It provides testing, analysis, research and advice to protect people, the environment, and material goods.

Running since 2019/2020, joint 3.5-year PhD projects have been aligned with several thematic areas of the partnership, namely in Chemistry and Materials, Energy, and Additive Manufacturing. Students typically spend the first 21 months at Birmingham and then transition to BAM in Berlin for the remainder of their PhD. Throughout the entire time, they benefit from training opportunities and support from both institutions, eventually graduating with PhD from Birmingham.

Training and Skills

We work with cross-sectoral partners to deliver capacity-building and skills-development programmes that enhance European capability and knowhow.

The 3-year programme (April 2024 – March 2027) will be delivered through comprehensive Continuing Professional Development sessions, a Massive Open Online Course and Micro-credentials.

Embedding EDI collaboration with University of Amsterdam

Together with the University of Amsterdam (UvA) we have fostered a significant partnership focused on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

Our annual EDI Festival, held alternately between Birmingham and Amsterdam, serves as a platform for students, staff, and community members to engage in discussions, workshops and activities with leading EDI scholars, focused on current challenges and strategies for fostering inclusive environments in academia and beyond.

The Urban Changemakers Summer School in Amsterdam enables participants to develop their understanding and confidence to address real-world social issues. The programme not only enhances students' academic and professional skills but also emphasises the importance of EDI in community development, whilst offering the opportunity for underrepresented students to immerse themselves in a fully-funded study abroad experience.

    EUniWell Moot Court Competition

The EUniWell Moot Court is a collaboration between the Universities of Birmingham, Murcia (Spain), Florence (Italy), Nantes (France) and Cologne (Germany). A moot court competition simulates a court hearing in which participants analyse a problem, research the relevant law, prepare written submissions, and present oral argument.

The project provides Law students with a unique and high-level competition experience, offering them an opportunity to address societal challenges related to key themes, including human rights, citizenship, security, and peace-building.

The competition also plays a vital role in promoting awareness and discussion around pressing legal issues relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals, such as good health and well-being (SDG 3) or reduced inequalities (SDG 10).
