Foundation Teaching and Learning

The BIA Foundation Pathways programme has four pathways. Upon successful completion of the appropriate pathway, you will be guaranteed progression to an extensive range of undergraduate programmes in the Colleges of Arts and Law, Engineering and Physical Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Medical and Dental Sciences or Social Sciences (specific academic and English language progression requirements apply for each programme).

Your Foundation Programme curriculum will comprise of 80-credits worth of subject-specific modules taught in the five colleges and 40 credits of English language and study skills modules (120 credits in total).

You will be taught in English and you will be mixing with students from all over the world. You will be constantly improving your academic, linguistic, and cultural skills, and by the end of the programme you will be fully prepared for studying your chosen undergraduate degree programme at Birmingham.

You are enrolled on to either a one-year or a four-year programme at the University. Although you are not tied to the University for your undergraduate studies, by the end of the first year, we expect that you will feel so at home in Birmingham that you will want to stay with us for the full duration of your studies in the UK.

Welcome from the team

A very warm welcome to you to Birmingham International Academy, University of Birmingham. I remember my first day at Birmingham as an international student and understand how you might be feeling joining us. What matters to you, matters to us - so please always engage with us. We are here for you. Learning is a treasure you will carry with you for the rest of your lives and we know you will make us proud. - Dr. Ravjeet Kour, Head of Foundation Delivery, Birmingham International Academy

As part of your Foundation Course, you will study English for Academic Purposes (EAP). The EAP module will support you with both language and academic skills and will help you to understand the academic expectations and standards at a UK university. Our EAP Teaching Fellows are experienced and qualified and will help you at the start of your UK academic journey. Remember – the more effort and hard work you put in, the more you will get out of it in the end. - Neil Richards, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Programme Manager (Pathways programmes)
