Award Description

Professor H Oritsejolomi Thomas was a former medical student at the University of Birmingham and the first Nigerian to be admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He specialised in facial reconstructive & plastic surgery.  

This award has been generously funded by his son Victor Awadagin Thomas, also an alumnus of the University of Birmingham, in his memory.

The Professor HO Thomas scholarship provides an annual scholarship of £2,000 to a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic undergraduate MBChB student, with a primary focus towards Black students.

The scholarship awards £2000 per annum to the first year undergraduate student who most closely meets the eligibility criteria. The award will continue for the duration of their MBChB degree, (including an intercalated year if relevant), subject to meeting satisfactory progression standards.

Value of Award

The award is disbursed as follow:

  • First payment (year 1) of £2000 made in March/April of the academic year. 
  • In years 2-5 split payments (£1000 each) will be made in October (Semester 1) and January (Semester 2).

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible students will meet the following conditions. The student who scores the highest points will receive the award. In the event of two or more students scoring the same number of points, the student who attended the least well performing school/college for A-levels will be awarded the scholarship. 

  • Home student (student classified as ‘Home for Fees’ at the programme start date) – no points allocated. 
  • Ethnicity – points allocated as follows based on the ethnicity categories provided at the time of registration.: 

Black or Mixed (Black/Black British – Caribbean; Black/Black British – African; Other Black background, Mixed - White and Black Caribbean, Mixed - White and Black African, Other Mixed Background) – 5 points. 

Other Asian and Minority Ethnic (Asian/Asian British – Indian; Asian/Asian British – Pakistan; Asian/Asian British – Bangladesh; Chinese; Other Asian background; Mixed – White and Asian; Arab) – 3 points. 

  • Home POLAR 4 Quintile – Q1 = 10 points, Q2 = 8 points, Q3 = 6 points, Q4 = 2 points, Q5 = 1 point. 
  • Contextual School (identified using the criteria described on the MBChB admissions webpage for identifying contextual applicants) – 5 points

How to Apply

The successful candidate is automatically selected using admissions data and therefore there is no application process. The successful candidate will be notified in November/December in the year of entry.
