The scholarship is for a number of  £10,000 awards towards tuition fees of a full-time postgraduate taught master’s degree programme, in addition to 10 x £10,000 for specific Birmingham Business School programmes (listed below) at the University of Birmingham UK campus starting September 2025.

Up to 10 full PhD scholarships covering full payment of tuition fees (at the 'overseas' fee rate) and any associated bench fees, paid for by the University of Birmingham, and a maintenance stipend and return international airfare between the UK and China, paid for by the China Scholarship Council.

The award is financed jointly by the University and the DFID. The award will cover:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Maintenance stipend
  • Air fare to and from the United Kingdom
  • Immigration Health Surcharge costs 
  • A one-off arrival allowance payment 
  • Thesis expenses 
  • Study travel grant
  • Optical and Dental allowance

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and UK universities.

Up to five awards of up to £600 are usually available. Each award is tenable for one year only, however previous applicants may reapply in subsequent years.

Offering awards of around £600, this scheme is open to all students currently studying at the University who have a disability.

Each of the 3 scholarships comprise a £10,000 award towards tuition fees (for the first year only) of a full-time postgraduate degree programme at the University of Birmingham UK campus, starting September 2025.
