Award Description
The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce the West Africa Postgraduate Chancellor's award of £10,000 for select students from Nigeria and Ghana applying for entry to a postgraduate taught programme at the University starting September 2025.
Value of Award
The scholarship is £10,000 towards tuition fees of a full-time postgraduate taught degree programme at the University of Birmingham UK campus, starting September 2025. The West Africa Postgraduate Chancellor's scholarship can be combined with the £5,000 125th Anniversary Scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
Students who are applying for government scholarships are still able to apply for our awards, but if the student does receive a full government scholarship or alternative scholarship award then they are no longer eligible for this scholarship.
Please note that students applying for the following subjects and programmes are not eligible for this scholarship:
In order to be eligible, candidates must:
- Have an excellent academic background. Candidates should have or be expecting a 2.1 and above in a bachelor's degree or equivalent.
- Have received an offer and selected the University of Birmingham as their firm choice for a full-time postgraduate taught programme starting September 2025.
- Meet the academic conditions of their offer to the programme.
- Be classed as nationals or domiciled in Nigeria or Ghana.
- Be classed by the University as an overseas fee payer for tuition fee purposes and be able to pay the outstanding tuition fees not covered by the scholarship.
- Have paid their £3,000 deposit by the deadline stated in their offer letter from the Admissions Office.
- Have sufficient funds to cover the full cost of living at the University of Birmingham, plus any visa/travel expenses associated with studying in the UK.
- Start their studies at the University in September 2025 (the scholarship award may not be deferred). If a scholarship recipient decides to defer their programme start date to September 2026, they will no longer be eligible as the scholarship is only available for programmes starting in September 2025.
- Be registered with, and have their postgraduate study application attached to, one of our local representatives listed below in alphabetical order.
- Submit your scholarship application through one of our local representatives by the deadline; 30th June 2025.
- Upon enrolment in September 2025, pay their net tuition fees for the academic year by 1 November, immediately following enrolment.
How to Apply
This is a competitive scholarship; please ensure you have fulfilled the eligibility requirements outlined above.
To apply for the scholarship students will need to have accepted an offer from the University of Birmingham, have selected Birmingham as their firm choice and paid the deposit. Be registered with, and have their postgraduate study application attached to, one of our local representatives listed below in alphabetical order.
The last date to apply for the scholarship is 30th June 2025.
Selection for the award will be based on academic merit and a 250-300 word summary on ‘Why Birmingham’ to be submitted to your local representative.
Decisions will be announced in July / early August and the scholarships will be awarded upon the students’ enrolment in September 2025.
