Richard Parkinson will present a ground-breaking LGBT history project by the British Museum, drawing on objects ranging from ancient Egyptian papyri to images by modern artists such as David Hockney and Bhupen Khakhar, to discuss how and why museums should represent same-sex experiences as integral parts of world culture.
R. B. Parkinson is Professor of Egyptology at the University of Oxford and was previously a curator at the British Museum. He is a specialist in Ancient Egyptian literature of the classic period, and his publications include Reading Ancient Egyptians Poetry (2009) and The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant: A Reader’s Commentary (2012), as well as popular guides and children’s books.
