The programme tackles contemporary urban challenges such as transport systems, environmental justice, connectivity, and accessibility, equipping you to harness big data and develop innovative, sustainable, and evidence-based solutions.
The program led me to engage with professionals from various disciplines, helping me understand the strengths and gaps each discipline possessed with respect to understanding urban issues. Multidisciplinary engagement aside, the experience served as a portal into the world of research for me, and made me a geographer by passion, and a planner at heart.

This course will run over 12 months in a full-time-mode. There is also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis over 24 months. While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each semester. This is based on a full time Masters course.
In Semester1 (September–January), you will establish a solid foundation in the theories, practices, and research skills essential for urban analytics. You will develop critical abilities to leverage data-driven approaches in analyzing and addressing the complex challenges of modern cities.

Assessments
Showcase your abilities through diverse assessment formats, including essays, presentations, case studies, government-style reports, urban modelling projects, poster presentations, and an extended research dissertation. The MSc Urban Analytics and AI for Planners is a modular programme comprising 180 credits. Core modules (20 credits each) provide foundational and advanced knowledge, while the 60-credit dissertation allows students to explore a specialised research topic in depth.

To secure your place at the University of Birmingham Dubai, you must meet both our general entry requirements and the specific criteria for your chosen course. Your application will be carefully reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will determine if you will receive an offer.
The MSc Urban Analytics and AI for Planners welcomes graduates from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, including urban and transport planning, civil engineering, transport and railway engineering, road and transport specialists, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and related fields. Designed for those interested in leveraging data and digital analytical tools, the programme requires no prior knowledge of mathematics or computer science, ensuring accessibility to individuals with a wide range of skill sets.
Entry is possible with a 2:2 degree, or equivalent, if supported by sufficient professional experience to compensate for a lower academic qualification. Applicants must demonstrate skills and insights that will allow them to contribute to and benefit from the MSc programme effectively.
Relevant experience should ideally be in fields such as urban development, environmental planning, public policy, transportation planning, or community development. Practical experience in architectural firms, public planning departments, real estate development companies, or non-profit organisations focused on urban or regional planning is also considered. This experience should reflect practical skills and a foundational understanding of urban analytics, planning challenges, and data-driven approaches aligned with the principles of sustainable and innovative urban planning.
In order to undertake a programme of study here at the University, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English. You can demonstrate your level of English with IELTS/TOEFL/PTE or alternative qualifications.
