Here is a short overview of what you can expect during this course.
In the first term (PGCert) or first year (MA), you’ll build a foundation in understanding disability within the UAE’s diverse school contexts. Key topics include models of disability, whole-school inclusive practices, and universal design for learning. MA students attend in-person lectures and seminars, while PGCert students focus on engaging with parents and applying these concepts in practice.

Our programme blends pioneering research with practical application, focusing on the development of inclusive education leaders. The PGCert in Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (ISEN) is a flexible, year-long, part-time course taught at the MA level. It provides essential theoretical and practical knowledge in disability, inclusion, and special education. Progressing to the MA Education, you’ll build on foundational modules, selecting specialist areas of interest in your second year. This unique course allows you to tailor your learning experience while mastering whole school inclusion, culminating in a Master’s dissertation that showcases your expertise.

The MA programme comprises 120 credits of taught material, while the PGCert comprises 60 credits. Modules are delivered through a combination of evening classes, online lectures, and weekend sessions, followed by a 60-credit Master’s Dissertation.

The Academic profile of Sarah Benson, Associate Professor, University of Birmingham Dubai
You should have a degree (equivalent to a UK Bachelors Degree of at least 2:2 or above) or a recognised equivalent qualification and this will be a condition of any offer where the degree has not already been awarded. If English is not your first language you may need to demonstrate proficiency in English through the completion of an academic level IELTS or equivalent. You should achieve a score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6 across all four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
We recommend our applicants be working in an educational setting however those who are working in non-profit organisations or within governmental organisations associated with the support of persons with disabilities will benefit. To be considered by the University of Birmingham you will also need to meet our general entry requirements:

Two references, of which one must be academic (e.g. previous university tutor) and one professional, that confirms your current role in an educational setting and evidences your motivation and ability to study.
A Personal Statement (minimum 500 - 700 words) on your motivation for and commitment to wanting to complete this programme of study as well as information about your educational context.
If English is not your first language you may need to demonstrate proficiency in English through the completion of an academic level IELTS or equivalent. You should achieve a score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6 across all four areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
In order to undertake a programme of study here at the University, you will need to demonstrate that you have a good level of written and spoken English. You can demonstrate your level of English with IELTS/TOEFL/PTE or alternative qualifications.
The University tuition fee covers the cost of your tuition, examination and graduation.
