The University of Birmingham and Ivan Franko National University of Lviv are joined in a #TwinforHope partnership that aims to demonstrate shared values, commitment, support and solidarity during the current invasion of Ukraine and beyond. We are collaborating to develop joint educational initiatives, share best practice and launch joint staff training and research projects.

Supporting the Rule of Law in Ukraine
We are working together to support Ukraine’s development as a constitutional democracy.
Backed by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) funding and the #TwinforHope campaign, this project brings together legal experts from Ukraine’s Constitutional Court, the Department of Constitutional Law at Ivan Franko National University Lviv, and the University of Birmingham Law School to create an ‘English-Ukrainian Dictionary of Legal Terms’.
Through historical and legal analysis, this first of its kind dictionary will provide correct translations of over 5,000 English language legal terms and help to rectify the acute problems that continued application of post-Soviet legal terminology cause for understanding the rule of law in Ukrainian jurisprudence.
The Maya Harbuzyuk Twinning Fellowship in Theatre Studies
Our joint Fellowship was established to honour the memory of Maya Harbuzyuk, late Dean of IFNUL's Faculty of Culture and Arts, in order to strengthen the Birmingham-Lviv research collaborations that she initiated in Theatre Studies.
The Fellowship is open to Academics and Early Career Researchers at IFNUL with an interest in the field of Shakespeare or general drama and theatre research. It provides funding to spend up to three months working on a research project at Birmingham and access to the Shakespeare Institute Library in Stratford which contains over 60,000 volumes, archives, manuscripts, and audio-visual collections relating to the study of Shakespeare and Renaissance drama.

Unlocking Ukraine: A journey through language, culture and history
Led by distinguished experts from Ukraine and beyond, this jointly organised summer school offered 30 participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Ukrainian language and the complexity of the country’s history and culture.
The diverse curriculum included an exploration of modern Ukrainian theatre, a deep dive into histories of displacement, and an examination of the intricacies of multiculturalism in Ukraine.
Scholars from Lviv, who have a proud tradition of teaching Ukrainian language and culture, were joined by experts from the University of Birmingham with a wealth of expertise in Central and Eastern Europe. This unique partnership resulted in an exceptionally dynamic and engaging summer school.
