Centre for Midlands History and Cultures
The Centre for Midlands History and Cultures was founded at the University of Birmingham to create a forum for research into and study of the history of the region.
Our aims:
- Promote innovative, interdisciplinary research into the history and culture of the Midlands;
- Develop collaborative partnerships with local organisations and community groups;
- Provide opportunities for local people and communities to learn about, engage with, and contribute to our understanding of the region.
The Centre’s scope spans the historic counties of Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire and adjacent counties such as Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Gloucestershire, and Leicestershire, from Roman times to the present day.

Friends of the Centre
The purpose of the Friends is to build links between the Centre and others with an interest in the history of the region, its people, and cultures.
Anyone can join and it’s free! We have members of all ages and from all backgrounds: anyone with an interest in our work is welcome.
You will then receive our monthly newsletter which includes details of Centre events, including research seminars and lectures, trips, social events, and volunteering opportunities.
The Friends network is run by a Committee of volunteers and we’re always looking for new recruits: if you’re interested or would like to find out more please get in touch.
