Enrolment, Welcome and Orientation

Registering is an essential part of becoming a student. You’ll need to be registered to be able to attend your study programme but it also means you can collect you Student ID card (see below) and be eligible to participate in the Guild of Students activities.

Complete your online registration

To become an official student of the University of Birmingham you must first register online. Before you arrive in Birmingham you will receive an email containing your username and password which you will need to complete Online Registration. It comes from our central system, not from the Study Abroad team. When you receive your registration email, please read the email thoroughly and follow the instructions carefully. For detailed information on Registration, please visit Online Registration. For general additional information, please visit our Welcome pages.

Once you have registered, you will have access to your 'My.UoB' portal where you can check your module registration status and our online learning platform called 'Canvas Learning Environment'. On Canvas, ensure you visit our Online Induction Module (UG), a dedicated resource to welcome new students at the University of Birmingham. You may also visit the Introduction to Canvas for Students module.

If you are coming to Birmingham you must complete your Right to Study Check (for all international students) and collect your ID card after you have completed your online registration.

Study Abroad & Exchanges Team - Student Support

The Study Abroad & Exchanges team will send you information about how you can contact them either face to face or virtually to ask any questions and get suppport.

One way in which the Study Abroad & Exchanges team provides support to students is to run online drop in sessions during each stage of an incoming study abroad and exchange student's journey to becoming a fully registered UoB student.  These sessions include completing the application, applying for accommodation, selecting modules and finalising your module registration, visa information in conjunction with our colleagues from the International Student team and pre-departure information.

Final registration and Welcome events

You will be sent information confirming the details of the final registration and welcome events in September or January, depending on when you are starting your studies, so please look out for these important updates.

Sessions about Module allocation and registration will be arranged by individual Colleges/Schools. Updated and detailed information will be provided to you during a Welcome and Orientation Briefing.

Enjoy your University-wide Welcome week

The Vice-chancellor's Welcome Address is your formal welcome from the Principal of the University and the President of the Guild of Students.  The Vice-chancellor's and Guild of Students President's Welcome Address will be broadcast on our online channels (YouTube and Facebook) for the beginning of Welcome.

The International Welcome Celebration is the official welcome to the University for new international students.  In this online interactive event, you will have the chance to meet some peers from around the world by taking part in our break out session, lead by our current students.  You'll have the chance to meet several University key staff members and members of the International Student Team.

These two events are just a small part of what is going on over Welcome week, which includes a range of online and on-campus activities to help you settle in and feel at home, so please make sure that you check your email for details.
