Birmingham ranked among the world's top 150 universities

The University of Birmingham has been ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide for Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy and Life and Agriculture Sciences. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, has placed Birmingham overall within the top 150 universities globally.

More than 1,200 universities are ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 universities are published. ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers and the number of articles published in journals such as Nature and Science.

Commenting on the results, University of Birmingham Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education Professor Jeff Bale said:

‘Our position in the Shanghai Ranking for 2015 shows that the University is continuing to compete strongly among our global peers.

‘The Shanghai Ranking clearly reflects the quality of our academic staff and we hope to see further gains as we continue to invest in both staff and our world class facilities, with almost £400 million being spent over the next five years to ensure that the University remains at the forefront of research and teaching excellence.’

These latest rankings build on the University’s impressive performance across all higher education league tables, including fourth position nationally for graduate employment (2013/14 leavers) and ranked joint third in the Russell Group in the National Student Survey 2015, with a satisfaction rating of 91 per cent for ‘teaching and learning’.
